Online Use

Internet overuse in teenagers has become a growing concern in recent years. Excessive use of the internet can have negative effects on physical and mental health, social interactions, and academic performance.

Teenagers who overuse the internet may experience symptoms such as anxiety, depression, poor sleep, and lack of motivation. They may also struggle with social skills, leading to isolation and difficulty forming relationships.

To combat internet overuse, it's important for teenagers to establish healthy habits and boundaries around their internet use. This can include setting limits on screen time, taking regular breaks, engaging in physical activities, and spending time with family and friends.

Warning signs of internet addiction

  •  Becoming agitated or angry when online time is interrupted

  •  Irritability when not allowed to access the internet

  •  Spending time online rather than with friends and family

  •  Spending time on the internet in place of homework and chores

  •  Disobeying usage time limits

  •  Sneaking online when no one is around

  •  Loss of interest in activities that were previously enjoyable

Resources for Schools

Following the Wellbeing Survey, you may have some students who have requested for help in reducing the amount of time they are spending on line or are prioritising their time online over other important activity such as sleep. Here is a template you can use for emails/material to provide to students for self help. Link here

However in most cases, you may also want to provide material for parents. Most schools already share resources such as these to parents or run parent evening on managing digital use in their children.

Here is a small selection of resources for Parents:
